TREHERBERT BOWLS CLUB
REVIEW OF 2021
INTRODUCTION
We began the year in lockdown due to Covid with no indication or hope of starting back in the near future.
We were continually waiting for good news of when and how we could restart our winter season, but the lockdown continued on and on and on, until the winter season was cancelled.
We then prepared for the summer season, which was delayed until the lockdown was eased. We were given a starting date, were well prepared and our members looking forward to playing again.
Our green hadn’t been looking at it’s best for many weeks and we didn’t know why. Then came the bad news, because of a Leatherjacket Infestation. The parks department deemed the green unplayable so the summer season was postponed for ????? we didn’t know how long.
We made the decision to go back to indoor short mat bowling until we could go outdoors again.
Some six weeks later, the parks department informed us that the summer season was cancelled for repair work to the green.
THE SPORT
We started the summer season (indoors) on Monday May 3rd. Sessions were held on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, starting at 11.30 am and we held Monday and Thursday evening sessions, at 5.00 pm.
To keep within Covid guidelines, social distancing etc., only eight players were allowed at each session. We played short mat bowls, rink, pairs etc. We had tournaments plus a target competition.
When the guidelines allowed refreshments indoors, still with social distancing etc. it was a pleasure to have a cup of tea or coffee to end the sessions.
During the summer season, we invited the Autism Centre in Treherbert to bring a group to our club for a session on a Thursday morning. I invited officials from the Centre to inspect our facilities and Chris and I visited their facilities to gain knowledge of the group at their base.
The sessions are now regularly held on Thursday mornings and have been deemed a success by the Autism Centre staff, ourselves and most importantly, the participants.
MOMENTS WE REMEMBER
The lockdown still with us in January.
Vaccinations.
Welsh government updates.
Leatherjacket infestation.
No summer season. (Indoor instead).
Wet weather, ducks on the green.
Autistic sessions.
Cream tea-parties.
Memorial buffet.
Chris’s tap dance.
Winter season beginning.
Christmas dinner (unforgettable)
PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT HAPPEN
This pandemic year, organizing the club has brought its challenges and it would have been very difficult without the help and support of many people.
Everyone in the parks department.
Chris Sheridan for keeping the website up to date and everything she did to make the clubhouse usable this year.
I would also like to thank Sam, (No one could have a better chairman) for his support throughout another difficult year.
All our club members, throughout the times we were allowed to play, for following the guidelines and helping each other to stay safe.
THOSE WE REMEMBER
This year, we have not lost any members through the virus or other causes.
In September, we held a Memorial Buffet for members who passed away due to the virus or other causes last year.
I wish to express my thanks to our members for making the Memorial Buffet a dignified success.
FINALLY.
I would like to thank everyone who came to Treherbert Bowls Club during this pandemic year. I hope you enjoyed what time you had at our club and that 2022 will see you all back safe and some normality will have returned.
THANK YOU, ALL FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT IN MAKING TREHERBERT BOWLS CLUB A PLEASURE TO BE INVOLVED WITH.
