Review of 2016 Season
Treherbert Bowls Club - Review of 2016 Season
This has been a very successful year. Improvements inside the clubhouse and outside at the green have encouraged increased participation by a wide cross section of the community.
The Sport
We had a full and varied calendar of events this year including the following.
We trialled two extra sessions for adults on Tuesdays and Saturdays in addition to the regular Fridays.
We introduced an Open Competition for juniors each Wednesday that included a bowls target element and Quoits in the clubhouse.
We hosted the Rhondda Borough Bowling Association’s Festival Match against Mid Glamorgan Bowling Association.
We were pleased to welcome Hafod Tenancy Support Group to our club for sessions.
Once again this year pupils from Penpych and Penyrenglyn Primary Schools attended the club each week. This culminated in the Annual Challenge Match in which 24 pupils from each school took part. The match which was played in a sporting manner on a warm, sunny day was won by Penyrenglyn for the first time by just one point. Julie Price (RCT Sport) presented the cups.
One of the highlights of our season was hosting Communities First Open Fun Day with bowlers of all ages from two years to sixty plus. They all enjoyed their bowling experience particularly the older children playing a target competition while the younger ones enjoyed the Quoits.
The Adult Pairs Competition was won by Anthony Jones and Ann Jones (unrelated).
The Monday League was shortened this year to only a handful of games with a knockout stage at the end. Disappointingly our team lost in the Semi Final but we were pleased to host the final which was won by Ystradfechan.
Supporters of our club.
I would like to thank Interlink, Rhondda Rotary and The Dunraven Hotel for the support they have given to our club this season. We were successful in the Sport RCT 12 Days of Christmas prize draw and the Post Code Community Trust Award from which we will receive sporting equipment.
People Who Make It Happen.
All these activities need organising and we could not have achieved this success without the support and help of many people.
I would like to thank the coaching team, (Sam Morgan, Adrian Davies, Gary Culverhouse, Chris Sheridan and Alun Howells as well as new assistant coaches, Mike Lias, Kay Layshon and Mair Trott) for all they do to help everyone who visits our club to enjoy the experience.
I would also like to thank all the other volunteers - Helpers of the week, those who helped in the kitchen, those who have helped with transport and in any other way.
Well done to Adrian and Chris on achieving their First Aid 2 qualification and special mention to Gary and Chris for administering our website and protecting our Domain name.
Earlier this year, Chris and I were given the Mayors Good Citizen Award. This award was in relation to both the flowers in Bute Street and the running of Treherbert Bowling Club. In addition I was recently nominated for the 2016 BBC Wales Sports Unsung Hero Award for my work in the Bowling Club and I was very proud to come runner up and attend the Wales Sports Personality of the Year Ceremony. It’s very nice to receive this recognition but without the support of our coaching team, all those who volunteer as well as members of the community and visitors to Treherbert Bowling Green, it would not have been possible. Thank you all, once again for your help and support
in making Treherbert Bowls Club a pleasure to be involved with.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who came to Treherbert Bowls Club this season. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and we’ll see you in 2017.
