Treherbert Bowls Club Review of 2020
INTRODUCTION
What a strange, what a disrupted, what a pandemic year we’ve had!!!!!!!!
The year started in a normal way with the last half of the winter season.
As the winter season ended the pandemic lockdown started.
This meant the summer season could not begin.
Once lockdown ended, we had to provide a risk assessment giving information about our arrangements to keep everyone safe, cleaning and rearranging the clubhouse facilities.
We started our summer season following new guidelines which included a booking system etc.
We were limited to 6 players, using only 3 of the 6 rinks (1,3,5 or 2,4,6) to maintain social distancing to begin with, later we were allowed up to 30 but we set a limit of 12.
Our summer season was reduced to 12 weeks.
The start of the new winter season was delayed due to the pandemic and the introduction of a “Fire-break”.
During this delay we installed window blinds and obtained some items of equipment.
When the new guidelines became known, we prepared the clubhouse accordingly and the way in which we could play safely.
We did another risk assessment and informed our members of their responsibilities i.e., wear masks, use sanitizer etc.
We limited the number of players to 8 per session to allow social distancing.
However, following the advice of the Chief Medical officer of Wales, (not to mix with anyone outside of your own household), the decision was made to close the club until the new year when the situation will be reviewed.
THE SPORT
We started the new year and the second half of our winter season, not knowing what was going to happen later.
As usual, we started the competitions. With everyone improving year on year, the competitions this year were of a very high standard of play with some great and close matches.
This year, we were using the two-mat format for the first time and proved to be very popular because of the different way the mats played and therefore, more of a challenge.
One of the most improved players, David Morgan, went on to win the short mat competition.
In the kurling competition, we were delighted to see Phil Williams, a wheelchair user, competing and winning his first match. He, like everyone else, got knocked out and Chris Sheridan was the last one standing to win the competition.
Our summer season was delayed because of the Coronavirus and the introduction of a national lockdown. When we were allowed to start, guidelines were introduced which meant that we would need to change the arrangements in the clubhouse and the way in which we played on the green.
Even with the new arrangements and the circumstances regarding the virus, there was still a good membership who soon got used to the new set-up. Members had to book a session and we added extra sessions to meet demand.
On the playing side, the standard continues to improve and it was a pleasure to watch the players also enjoying their games.
The Memorial Challenge Cup Target Competition was enjoyable and competitive. Lots of bowls on target. Phil Watts presented the winner Chris Sheridan with the cup.
There were no junior bowling sessions or schools sessions this season due to the Coronavirus.
MOMENTS WE REMEMBER
So many members being unwell in January.
When it was necessary to end our winter season early because of the “Lockdown”.
The last session of the winter season, partying in the tea-room. UNFORGETABLE!!!!!
The day we were able to start our summer season, HURRAH.
Len Pearce reaching 90 years of age.
Not being able to have our VE day party, SAD.
Starting our winter season and being able to socialize again. FANTASTIC.
Closing our winter season early due to second wave of the virus. DISSAPOINTED.
PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT HAPPEN
This pandemic year, organizing the club has brought its challenges and it would have been very difficult without the help and support of many people.
Those who helped us with our successful funding application, (Roller Blinds etc.)
Meriel Gough.
Simon James.
Kate Breeze.
Geraint Davies for supporting my preparations for the risk assessment.
Everyone in the parks department.
Chris Sheridan for doing the website.
A special mention to all our members for understanding and following the changes that were necessary to make the sessions safe.
My thanks to Chris for everything she has done to make the clubhouse usable throughout this difficult year.
I would also like to thank Sam, (No one could have a better chairman) for his support throughout this difficult year.
THANK YOU ALL ONCE AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT IN MAKING TREHERBERT BOWLS CLUB A PLEASURE TO BE INVOLVED WITH.
As with most organizations, the covid-19 pandemic has hit our club, four of our members have sadly passed away, three directly because of the virus.
MEMBERS WE REMEMBER
Ann Jones April 10th
David Daniel Evans October 27th
Brian East October
David Havard December 10th
FINALLY.
I would like to thank everyone who came to Treherbert Bowls Club throughout this pandemic year. I hope that you will have enjoyed what time you had with us and that 2021 will see you all back safe and that some normality will have returned.
