May 2016 Newsletter
Tuesday 3rd May. The Adult Session went ahead despite the threat of showers. It was an enjoyable session for the players. All the players bowled very well but Jean Morgan in particular was in top form scoring heavily for her rink, also we were all so happy to see Brenda Davies beginning to play well again.
Penyrenglyn School had their session today with 31 pupils attending. Mike Lias and Kay Leyshon, who have recently volunteered to join our coaching team had their first session with the pupils and did a good job. THANK YOU BOTH.
We have altered the target element of the schools sessions this year and the pupils enjoyed the challenge.
Our club night went ahead as usual, luck was with us today, we played all our sessions on a lovely evening, everyone enjoyed their bowling.
Wednesday 4th May. It was the best weather night of the season so far and we were very busy at the green, lots of members playing as well as children having taster sessions. The coaching staff were all very busy and enjoyed what turned out to be a great evening.
Friday 6th May. A really enjoyable session on a sunny morning. All bowlers played well today on a fast green, the star of the day was Sylvia Hughes who was consistent, very near, or on the Jack. We ended the session with a target match between the 2 rinks which was competitive and brought out the best in all the bowlers.
Saturday 7th May. We were lucky this-morning, the rain cleared in time for us to play our session. The players coped very well with the slower green, Jean Green and Susan Anderson played very well which was great to see. We held a target competition this morning, 2 teams competed, all the players involved scored well and the result was a fair draw. A nice morning all round.
Monday 9th May. Unfortunately we were unable to play due to the rain.
Tuesday 10th May. Another day of rain forced the cancellation of all bowling today. On a brighter note we were invited to host a Festival Match between Rhondda Borough Bowling Association and the Mid Glamorgan Bowls Association on Wednesday July 13th at 2.00 pm. (6 rinks)
I would like to thank Gary Culverhouse and Chris for working on our computer set-up in order to protect our domain.
Thursday 12th May. The sun is out at last. I'm going to call this "Magical Thursday, the green full of people of all ages from 7 years up to 80 years. In the Gallery are photographs of 3 generations playing together and Mair Trott scoring a wonderful shot. A few 7 year olds having a taster session today.
Friday 13th May. Lovely warm, sunny day to play bowls, 2 rinks enjoyed a game before being called together for a match on the target, the girls against the boys which ended in a fare draw. We were pleased to welcome Gareth and Gemma back in the fold for their first session of the season. Gemma informed us that she is due to have a baby boy in the next few weeks and we all wish her well.
I informed the session that Chris and myself had been invited to the Parc and Dare on Monday to receive the Mayors Good Citizen Award and the news was well received by all those present.
Saturday 14th May. Good turn-out today, there is a good club atmosphere developing through all sessions, which is very encouraging. It is great to see all players having a good time and in a good spirits.
Monday 16th May. We welcomed Maureen Price back tonight. The green was very busy, lots of young players, some new faces, Jenson, 7 years old yesterday couldn't wait to come bowling, been nagging his father for days. Some of the Pen-Pych school children visited tonight and we had our first junior target competition of the season. Our club is a happy place to be.
One last news item, Chris and I attended the Parc and Dare today to accept The Mayor's Good Citizen Award. This is the first time that these awards have been presented. Although we received this award, it could only have been possible with the help of all the volunteers and their commitment at the bowling club; the Coffee Morning Ladies' and Marianne McCarthy for their contributions towards the communal garden. Also, 'Communities First' and the encouragement of the people of Treherbert has been invaluable towards the success of these two projects.
Wednesday 18th May. The weather allowed us to play tonight, a good turn-out which is becoming the norm. We seem to be attracting more families now, a good mix of ages who are comfortable playing together.
Friday 20th May. We dodged the weather again today. Marion called in to visit today and it was nice to see her back out and about again. With regards to the bowling, there was some terrific bowling on rink 1 where they were playing a triples, it's difficult to single anyone out but Silvia played very well on her last visit for the time being as she is going to have an operation next week, we wish her well, also Brenda played some excellent shots.
We were also fortunate to play the evening session where there was a triples being played on one rink and we have to mention a couple of good performances, by Cian and Lauren.
Another visitor this-morning was one of our regular bowlers Susan Anderson who brought along her baby granddaughter, (photo in gallery).
Tuesday 24th May. Our adults had a good session this morning, Penyrenglyn School brought along 29 pupils for their session today practicing on the target for their match against PenPych later on in the season. Nice evening session in the sun-shine.
I had a meeting this-morning with Julie Price (RCT Sport) to discuss what she could look into regarding funding. I gave Julie an up-to-date on how our club is functioning at the moment and the improvements I would like to achieve with regard to Instructors courses, First Aid courses and Child Protection courses.
Friday 27th May. Sylvia had her operation on Wednesday as planned and is doing well. Phil Green has an injury to his knee which shocked us all. He will not know to what extent until he has a further medical examination. Everyone at the club hopes it won't be too serious and he will be back with us sooner rather than later.
Saturday 28th May. Lovely sunny day, a very enjoyable morning, played 2 triple rinks which were very competitive and a nice social cuppa afterwards.
Tuesday 31st May. Another nice day. We will remember today because Sam Morgan arrived injured from playing football, we heard the good news about Gemma today, she has had a baby boy named Gareth after his dad. A busy evening tonight, More families are coming to play which shows the club becoming a community hub.
