June 2016 Newsletter
Wednesday 1st June. We start the month on a high note, One of our volunteers, Alun Howells was made May's Volunteer of the Month by RCT Sport. Alun's nomination is printed below;-
"I am nominating Alun Howells for the Volunteer of the Month Award. The first thing I must tell you is that Alun has Learning Difficulties which affects his ability to read and write and his ability to explain a point.
I took on the responsibility of leading Treherbert Bowling Club eight years ago. From a low starting point the club has grown to be a very popular venue for children from the age of seven also for adults. We have been fortunate to have assistance when needed from Communities First, Sport Wales and Sport RCT. We have also been fortunate to have had a committed team of volunteers to assist all the bowlers who visit.
All volunteers have taken courses such as First Aid, Child Protection as well as Assistant Coaching Courses.
One of our volunteers, of course, is Alun Howells.
When he joined the club, he was low in self-esteem and confidence, he was also a smoker.
From day one he has turned up regularly, assisted with enthusiasm in all aspects of running the bowling sessions at the Junior Club, The Adult Sessions and the school sessions, opening and closing the club, setting out the rinks etc.
His contribution to the running of the club is invaluable; he puts his heart and soul into everything he does and to the best of his ability. His confidence has grown and he has given up smoking which is an achievement in itself. By the way, he is also a very good bowler. He is an example of what can be achieved.
I very much believe an award of this kind to Alun would encourage others with similar difficulties to participate in any role within sport.
Thank you
Clive Sheridan (secretary of Treherbert Bowling Club)"

Saturday 4th June. Good bowls played today, all players are continuing their improvement in bowling and understanding the tactical side as well. Cian Adams played outstanding today in the role of Skip, well done Cian.
Monday 6th June. A good evening session, 4 rinks in use. We welcomed Clay to our club as a new Senior member, he is from South Africa, his daughter Layla is a Junior member and they brought along Josh who joined our Junior club
Tuesday 7th June. Lovely adult bowling session, Penyrenglyn School had their normal session with 28 pupils today. Junior club went well, a target session was particularly successful.
The highlight of the day was the presentation in the clubhouse with the school children attending and the coaching staff to see Julie Price (RCT Sport) present Alun with his certificate and prize voucher for being selected THE RCT SPORT VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH.
Friday 10th June. Good turn-out this morning 14 of our adult members attended. Phil Green is back, Sylvia is improving, Gemma has had a little set back since having her baby, we wish her a speedy recovery, Penypych had their first session of the season, 23 pupils. Nice evening club night, 4 rinks in use, nice to see members bringing along their grandchildren to play.
Sunday 12th June. The Dunraven Hotel held a fund raising event for us today, it was a horse racing event in the afternoon/evening. The Dunraven hold events regularly for worthy causes within the community, which is a credit to them. Many members of our club attended today and we all enjoyed the event. We once again thank all those involved, particularly Nick and Ruth. All sponsors and those Dunraven regulars who attended, we are very grateful to them for supporting us. I did say a few words on behalf of the club and also invited the Dunraven regulars to a challenge match in the near future which should be a lot of fun. The money raised today will give us some security for the future and we appreciate the opportunity to continue to offer everyone within the community to enjoy the facilities at Treherbert Bowling Club.
Monday 13th June. No play tonight because of rain. The children who did turn up enjoyed a game of cards.
Saturday 18th June. Nice game of bowls this -morning. 3 of our members attended the Assistant Coaching Course this -morning and attained accreditation, well done. We have decided to introduce a Competition Wednesday program through the summer for our junior members which will include a Target element and our new game called Quoits. This will begin on Wednesday 29th June promptly at 5.15 pm.
Tuesday 21st June. Morning session went well. Penyrenglyn school visited for their session, 25 pupils, a good session, children played well. Busy evening session, used our new game quoits tonight, very popular, many children playing.

We are proud of the Rhondda 2K Team who won the Great Western Bowls Tournament today particularly of our clubs contribution to the team of Alun Lauren and Lisa Howells. We must also mention Gary Culverhouse's involvement coordinating, coaching and administrating for the team.
Friday 24th June. Penpych school had their session today, 24 pupils arrived and had a good session on the Jack and then on the Target. Their session was interrupted for a short time when we had a shower, we used the break to introduce them to our new game of Quoits. They enjoyed it very much especially when the staff had a try.
